129. Fury at new EU tax on Britain | Express.co.uk - Home of the Daily and Sunday Express | UK News
THE EU plans to hammer Britain with a crippling new tax that will hit pensions, cost jobs and devastate business, it has emerged. The Franco-German plot will put Britain on course for another punishing clash with Brussels and leave David Cameron facing unrelenting demands for a referendum on our membership of the EU.French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel were yesterday edging towards a deal for a swingeing EU-wide financial transaction tax, despite fierce opposition from Britain.

130. The EU seeks more austerity and less growth
Several contributors want to hear more about the many ways in which the EU affects or controls our lives. There are all too many ways, following years of EU directives and regulations, based on the huge powers transferred in The Treaties of Rome, Nice, Amsterdam and Lisbon, to name but four that rarely get mentioned. In recent years the EU has been granted large new powers to regulate banks and financial institutions. This week-end reports ciruclated that the EU is now considering imposing capital surcharges of as much as 10% of a bank’s assets on EU large banks on top of the minimum 7% capital ratio required already. The aim is to stop EU banks getting into the mess they got into in the 2008-12 period. That is a worthy aim, but this remedy does not seem to be based on any sensible analysis of why various large EU banks got into difficulties in that period or what is needed to get us out of the mess. There is little recognition that Central Banks and regulators got it wrong as well as the commercial banks, producing a toxic mixture.

131. The Nonce Finder General strikes again: Within days of his death, MP Tom Watson accused Leon Brittan of child rape without hard evidence, so RICHARD LITTLEJOHN wants to know why the LEFT don't think libel rules apply to them
Are there any Left-wing sex offenders? I only ask because all those put in the frame for alleged sex crimes seem to dress to the Right politically.Nonce Finder General Tom Watson is, of course, a Labour MP and has a vested interest in painting all Conservatives as rapists and child molesters.Watson's latest target is Leon Brittan, who died last week. Brittan served under Mrs Thatcher. So, as far as the Left are concerned, he must be guilty.Ding, dong, the paedo's dead.

133. Euro crisis: Britain got it right, and is consequently less influential than ever –...
Being a British Eurosceptic in Brussels means spending a great deal of time being patronized by not-terribly-bright people. I’ve lost count of how many times a Euro-integrationist MEP has tried to put me right, adopting the tone one would take with a recalcitrant six-year-old. The conversations usually end with the federalist delivering some utter banality along the lines of “If you are not present at the table, you cannot be part of the discussion!” and then wandering off with a delighted grin, convinced he has won the argument.

Last year, I published an article about a young Wokingham resident who tragically died on 18 February 2010 from carbon monoxide poisoning. Her family has now set up a new charity, the Katie Haines Memorial Trust which has raised a considerable sum of money in an effort to raise awareness of carbon monoxide and to try to persuade people to buy an audible carbon monoxide alarm.

135. Nick Clegg and Lib Dem plot with lobbyist to rally business chiefs against Cameron | Mail...
Nick Clegg and Lib Dem Cabinet ministers are today accused of plotting to persuade business leaders to undermine David Cameron’s historic stand against a new EU treaty. In an email leaked to the Mail, the heads of blue chip firms are asked to sign up to a letter demanding that the Government ‘re-engages’ with Brussels. It is being circulated by leading City lobbyist Roland Rudd following a meeting with Mr Clegg, Vince Cable, Danny Alexander and Chris Huhne. It says it is ‘imperative’ that Britain is not left on the ‘outside’ when important decisions are taken on the future of Europe.A recent ComRes poll for the Open Europe think tank found that 69 per cent of managers at UK finance firms support a British veto on EU financial rules even if it reduces access to the single market. The survey of 500 bosses found that 56 per cent think that, on balance, the costs of EU financial regulation currently outweigh the benefits of the single market to the City, while 31 per cent disagree. Many of Britain’s top businessmen applaud David Cameron’s boldness at last week’s euro summit.BAE Systems chairman Dick Olver, who heads one of the UK’s biggest exporters, said that David Cameron’s refusal to sign up to a new European fiscal accord was: ‘a brave thing to do and the right thing to do’.Simon Wolfson, Tory peer and chairman of high street retailer, Next, said: ‘The Prime Minister was absolutely right. There is no point in having a veto if you’re never prepared to use it. The reassurances the Prime Minister wanted were to protect one of Britain’s most valuable industries and were entirely reasonable.’

136. France's Francois Baroin attacks UK economy: Even Europhile Nick Clegg thinks he's gone too far...
France was told by Nick Clegg today to end 'simply unacceptable' attacks on the UK economy amid mounting cross-Channel tensions over the eurozone crisis.French prime minister Francois Fillon telephoned the Deputy Prime Minister to insist he had not intended to call into question the UK's credit rating.Mr Fillon and the head of the French central bank had suggested Britain was a candidate for a downgrade amid fears in Paris that France might lose its coveted AAA rating. His finance minister Francois Baron further inflamed the situation today by calling the UK's situation 'very worrying' and suggesting France was better off.Downing Street resisted any direct retaliation but Mr Clegg launched a furious retort in his conversation with Mr Fillon.

137. Americans! Please stop calling us Europeans! – Telegraph Blogs
The Cousins have finally clocked the EU for what it is: a corporatist, protectionist, anti-American racket. Heaven knows it took them long enough. For decades, they did everything they could to encourage political integration, pouring money into the European Movement, ending every summit with a demand for deeper union. Not any more. Most Americans are now watching in dismay as their country becomes 'more European' – by which they mean more timid, more centralized, more regulated and more indebted. At CPAC over the weekend, speaker after speaker was applauded for tearing into the Brussels model.

138. Martin Callanan MEP's report from the European Parliament Tory MPs
Of course, we were supposed to be feeling "isolated". That was according to the newspapers with a federalist leaning - and especially if you listened to the BBC.We were meant to be marginalised and misled too, but above all - "isolated". That was the buzzword on every corporation newsreader's lips and every euro-mad leader-writer's spell-check.Yet isolated was about the last thing Tory MEPs were feeling as we gathered in Strasbourg for last week's plenary session. On the Monday after "Veto Friday", we felt united, hopeful, energised: all of those things; but isolated? Not that you would notice."Isolated" implies vulnerability, fear, even regret. On the contrary, Conservatives were feeling confident, invigorated and - not to put too fine a point on it - right.Inevitably, there was a backlash against us in the parliament chamber. On Tuesday, the EPP's leader Joseph Daul provocatively said the Prime Minister's veto showed we in Britain lacked "solidarity" with the rest of the EU. He said we should therefore forfeit our hard-fought rebate (or as much of it as Labour hadn't already handed back). If anyone still thinks we should never have left the EPP, please take heed. The Liberal ALDE group leader Guy Verhofstadt, a man seldom hindered by self-doubt or sense of proportion, pronounced that if the UK were not "at the dining table" as a guest, then it would end up "on the menu". Not very statesmanlike for a former prime minister, albeit of Belgium.

A return to national currencies is the only hope – but it won’t be easy or cost-free.It is a tragic irony. Dreams are turning into nightmares. High aspirations are crumbling into chaotic outcomes. The idealists who believed that they were rescuing Europe may have encompassed its destruction.

140. Jos̩ Manuel Barroso sends us the bill for propping up the euro РTelegraph Blogs
José Manuel Barroso plans to solve the euro crisis with more debt, more spending, more intervention, more integration – more, indeed, of all the things that created the mess in the first place. Alright, you might say, but that's his problem. If the eurozone wants to self-harm, who are we to stop it?

141. MEPs demand a bigger bailout fund, Eurobonds, common economic government and a European finance...
Guy Verhofstadt (this Guy) has written an open letter to José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission. Like most Eurocrats, he sees the economic crisis primarily as an opportunity to push ahead deeper integrationIt is, of course, an iron rule of Euro-politics that, whatever the problem, the solution is 'more Europe'. Even by this standard, though, Verhofstadt's letter is a gem. Future archaeologists, picking over the remains of European civilisation, will one day quote it as a perfect example of the fin-de-siècle derangement that preceded the downfall.

Not content with landing us with the bill for keeping the euro together, European Commissioners are insisting that we cede control of our social security system. As things stand, if someone arrives in Britain without intending to support himself, he doesn't automatically qualify for the same benefits that are available to British nationals – or, indeed, to foreigners granted the 'right to reside'. We can, in other words, distinguish between those who mean to pay into the system and those who don't (see here).

143. What can we expect from our new EU Commissioner candidate?
Lord Hill has to run the gauntlet of the European Parliament endorsement hearing. They will want him to be loyal to the Treaties Conservatives have opposed, loyal to a federally inclined Commission which we oppose, and keen on the project of ever closer union which the UK cannot accept. He will doubtless use language to get through his test which will upset Eurosceptics.
