257. Is the 'greenest government ever' turning brown? – Telegraph Blogs
Eric Pickles makes an unlikely eco-warrior. So it speaks volumes about this week’s Cabinet reshuffle that his survival is the only thing that pleased environmentalists. Both they and climate sceptics agree that it has radically changed policy, finally strangling those huskies and ditching the green agenda which David Cameron embraced to help make his party

260. Labour would bring back 50p top rate of tax so the richest pay their fair share, says Ed Balls |...
A Labour government would re-introduce the 50p top rate of tax to force the rich into paying their fair share, Ed Balls pledged today. The shadow chancellor said he would reverse the decision taken by the coalition to reduce the amount levied on Britain's highest earners - those on more than £150,000 - so he could help reduce the deficit.Mr Balls told the annual Fabian Society conference in central London this morning that 'those with the broadest shoulders' should bear a 'fairer share of the burden'.However, his plans could cause 'unmitigated disaster', a tax campaigners' group warned, while businesses said the call smacked of a 'knee jerk reaction'.

261. Robert Halfon MP: Ed Miliband isn't talking about Disraeli's One Nation, and this presents Tories with a wonderful opportunity | ConservativeHome
I am one of those who believe that pessimism is a luxury that no Tory can allow himself. So, whilst we can watch Mr Miliband's speech and congratulate him for some political ingenuity — regarding his 'One Nation' clarion call — in practice this gives Conservatives a tremendous opportunity: a chance to reinvigorate the Big Society. For Labour, 'One Nation' still remains another way of saying “the State”. Looking at his speech closely, Mr Miliband argues for “collective action” through the mechanisms of the State. This has been the Socialist cry through the ages; alleviate poverty through redistribution using the levers of Government. He still is arguing for a social-democratic state that robs from the rich in order to give to the poor.Another thought: “One Nation” as expounded by Disraeli was intrinsically “Tory” — it spoke for tradition, not for its own sake, but because it provided an anchor of stability between the generations. For Labour, the '500 year old Oak Tree' is anathema because their view of “One Nation” means Year Zero.Instead of uniting, Mr Miliband's Year Zero seeks to divide. If you have inherited wealth (except, of course, if you come from Hampstead Liberal stock), if you went to a posh school, then automatically you are placed in the category of “undesirable”. An opening for class war — and an opening, too, to create an “internal enemy” — the actions of demagogues throughout the ages, and hardly the stuff of 'One Nation'.

263. Liam Fox and David Davis say they 'will not be constrained' in speaking out for the Tory right | Daily Mail
Liam Fox and David Davis are supporting a new group which says David Cameron's "detoxification" strategy has left the Conservatives out of touch with their activists. Two Conservative big beasts today warned they will 'not be constrained' as they launched a campaign group calling for a more traditional Tory message on tax, spending and Europe.Former Defence Secretary Liam Fox and David Davis, who lost out to David Cameron in the Tory leadership, said Conservative Voice will set out a more 'distinctive' position from their Liberal Democrat coalition partners.Group founder Don Porter warned Mr Cameron’s 'detoxification' strategy to shake-off the Conservative image as the nasty party has left it out of touch with voters. He said he was 'personally very keen' to win back former Tories who have defected to UKIP.

265. The dirty secret of Britain's power madness: Polluting diesel generators built in secret by foreign companies to kick in when there's no wind for turbines - and other insane but true eco-scandals | Daily Mail
Thousands of dirty diesel generators are being secretly prepared all over Britain to provide emergency back-up to prevent the National Grid collapsing when wind power fails. And under the hugely costly scheme, the National Grid is set to pay up to 12 times the normal wholesale market rate for the electricity they generate. One of the main beneficiaries of the stopgap plan is the Government itself, which stands to make hundreds of millions of pounds by leasing out the capacity of the generators in public-sector property including NHS hospitals, prisons, military bases, police and fire headquarters, schools and council offices. But the losers will be consumers who can expect yet further hikes in their electricity bills in the name of ‘combating climate change’.The scheme is expected to cost £1 billion a year by 2015, adding five per cent to energy bills.

270. "A Thin-Skinned Minority Is Ruining This Nation": Professor Crushes "Political Correctness" Wave Sweeping America
In a time where college students are offended by pretty much everything, The Federalist Papers reports that one professor at UNC-Wilmington decided to cut through the rhetoric and let his students know that they aren’t the special snowflakes liberals and their parents would have them believe. His epic class introduction has gone viral, and for good reason: this is the most common sense lecture to come out of any college in a long time.Welcome back to class, students! I am Mike Adams your criminology professor here at UNC-Wilmington. Before we get started with the course I need to address an issue that is causing problems here at UNCW and in higher education all across the country. I am talking about the growing minority of students who believe they have a right to be free from being offended. If we don’t reverse this dangerous trend in our society there will soon be a majority of young people who will need to walk around in plastic bubble suits to protect them in the event that they come into contact with a dissenting viewpoint. That mentality is unworthy of an American. It’s hardly worthy of a Frenchman.Let’s get something straight right now. You have no right to be unoffended. You have a right to be offended with regularity. It is the price you pay for living in a free society. If you don’t understand that you are confused and dangerously so.

272. Secret plan to axe 90 per cent of Tory associations which would smooth George Osborne's coronation as leader
David Cameron is planning to cull hundreds of Tory associations and strip local chairmen of their powers under controversial plans to rein in the Conservative grassroots. The Daily Telegraph can disclose that up to 90 per cent of the country's 650 Conservative associations could be axed under the biggest reforms to the party's structure in 18 years.Critics believe that it is a bid to reduce the influence of Tory members - which are typically eurosceptic - on the party's next leadership contest. It comes just weeks after Mr Cameron faced a furious response from Conservative members after telling MPs to ignore the views of eurosceptic associations in the build-up to the referendum.
