6. New fuel tax stands at forecourts across the country show the true cost of taxes on petrol and...
We’ve today launched a major new campaign with the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) to highlight the burden that excessive fuel taxes are placing on motorists and retailers alike. Our latest campaign against high taxes is targeted where they hurt the most, at the pumps. Working with the PRA, over 5,000 Fuel Tax Stands have gone to independent forecourts across the UK so that customers can see exactly how much of their cash is going straight to the Treasury. The stands show that 60 per cent of what customers pay at the pumps goes straight to the tax man. When drivers pay £30 at the till, around £18 of that is paid straight to the Exchequer, with only the remaining £12 covering the cost of the fuel – including just £1 to the retailer.

Chancellor George Osborne is planning a 3p-a-litre increase in fuel duty at the upcoming budget and Fairfuel UK is organising a mass lobby of Parliament to combat what it calls an 'absolute crisis'.Mr Osborne also stood by his decision to rule out any further duty cuts for motorists. He said: 'We’ve taken action in last two fiscal statements either to avoid a fuel duty increase that was coming or to cut fuel duty.'Fuel duty is 6p lower than it would have otherwise would have been. I have absolutely shown willingness to respond to international fuel increases and have taken action this year to tackle fuel duty rises, which were planned by the last Labour government.'Fairfuel UK will confront MPs on March 7 along with struggling motorists, taxi firms, catering companies and car companies including the RAC.Peter Carroll from Fairfuel UK said: 'This is an absolute crisis in the history of the nation. 11. "Significant victory" for Robert Halfon MP as new Energy Minister John Hayes promises to investigate oil market practises
Robert Halfon held a debate on the oil industry in the House today, focusing on the harmful consequences of high petrol prices for many Britons, and especially those in rural areas. Mr Halfon summarised his argument for ConHome this morning, so there's not much need to re-state the case for an investigation into the oil market, but it is worth noting the response of the newly appointed Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change, John Hayes. Mr Hayes agreed to look into the complaints raised by Mr Halfon and the Petrol Promise campaign.

13. Petrol heads and rail nuts
Transport policy is a strange UK battleground between car enthusiasts and rail fans. There is a reluctance by some of the participants to recognise that both trains and cars require burning large amounts of fuel, they both pose safety hazards which increase as speed increases, but both are important to many people’s lives. They are both noisy neighbours. New roads and new railway lines are equally unpopular with the people living near to the proposed route.

14. Robert Halfon MP: Let’s give White Van Conservatism wheels – scrap the 3p fuel tax rise!
On Tuesday, I tabled a Private Members Bill on petrol prices, supported by many other Conservative backbenchers, as well as MPs from Northern Ireland, and Scotland. (You can see an extract in the short video above.) The idea behind it was very simple: that fuel tax should be crystal clear to motorists. In essence, this would sweep away the complex regulations about what fuel garages can and cannot put on their till receipts, and replace them with one simple rule. That whenever you fill up the family car, the till receipt should say in black and white how much fuel duty, VAT, and petrol you have paid. It should also say how much is actually being spent on Britain’s roads. Simple. This would make the tax system more honest; it would be a big deterrent against any future tax-rises; and it would add pressure on the oil companies to be fair.
